Delivering Innovation and Efficiency at Bristol Airport’s New Transport Hub

14.08.2025

Statom Group is proud to play a central role in the delivery of Bristol Airport’s new multi-storey car park, a critical component of the airport’s £60 million transport hub development. Working in collaboration with the Griffiths Farrans Joint Venture, Statom’s expertise in hybrid concrete construction, lifting solutions, and programme management has helped shape a delivery method that meets both an accelerated programme and high-quality standards.

Hybrid Construction: Precision and Performance Combined

To meet tight deadlines without compromising on the exposed concrete finish demanded by the client, a hybrid approach combining precast and in-situ methods was adopted. Statom was instrumental in developing and delivering this solution, with off-site fabricated soffits for the underside of slabs brought in at high frequency to maintain the build momentum.

The complexity of managing such a high volume of deliveries was met with meticulous logistical planning, ensuring minimal disruption and zero tolerance for failure on site. This approach allowed for rapid installation while upholding finish quality.

Efficient and Sustainable Formwork Systems

A tailored formwork solution was used for the insitu concrete beams, utilising table formwork systems designed for fast striking and reuse. This not only improved speed and programme certainty but also offered significant sustainability benefits—reducing both labour requirements and the consumption of timber and formwork materials by up to 50%.

The decision to use precast columns, proposed by Statom and agreed upon by the design team, further supported efficiency while alleviating pressure on site labour, a challenge due to the project’s location outside major labour pools..

Lifting Strategy and Equipment Excellence

As the programme evolved and became increasingly lifting-intensive, Statom proactively upgraded all three tower cranes on site to larger capacity models. These were supplied and operated by Trident Lifting Solutions, Statom’s specialist lifting subsidiary. This foresight ensured smooth material handling and reinforced the Group’s ability to adapt to the live demands of the programme..

The project includes 45,000m² of suspended slabs and will eventually accommodate up to 2,000 cars with a new public transport interchange on the roof level—making it a vital component in Bristol Airport’s long-term infrastructure plans..

Stan Nikundinski, Group CEO, commented:

“We are thrilled to partner with Griffiths Farrans and Bristol Airport on this significant infrastructure project. Our team is dedicated to delivering a facility that not only meets the highest standards of quality and innovation but also contributes to sustainability and local employment goals.”

Paul Whelan, Group Managing Director, added:

“This new multi-storey car park project is a key part of our ongoing strategy to diversify both the types of projects we deliver and our geographical footprint. We aim to be the specialist contractor of choice for clients across the UK.”
