As a key component of the Milton Keynes East Highway Infrastructure development, the River Ouzel Bridge is a significant civil engineering undertaking, bringing together specialist foundation engineering, reinforced concrete construction and carefully coordinated environmental considerations.
Crossing the River Ouzel, the bridge forms part of the infrastructure required to support the area's planned growth and improve connectivity across the developing highway network.
The engineering challenge
Delivering a bridge within a sensitive river corridor demands more than structural expertise. The works require robust foundations, precision in reinforced concrete construction and careful management of the interfaces between the bridge, approach embankments and surrounding highway infrastructure.
The specification called for a substantial deep foundation solution to support the bridge abutments and wing walls, alongside a range of specialist bridge components and associated construction activities.
Environmental protection was also an important consideration, with measures required to safeguard the watercourse and surrounding habitats throughout the construction process.
The construction solution
The foundation design incorporates 98 bored cast-in-place piles, each 750mm in diameter and 14 metres long.
This comprises 56 piles supporting the two bridge abutments and a further 42 supporting the associated wing walls.
Specified to a minimum concrete grade of C32/40, the piled foundations provide the structural support required for the bridge and its associated elements.
Precision reinforced concrete construction
The bridge incorporates reinforced concrete abutments and wing walls, supported by carefully specified concrete mixes and reinforcement systems. Permanent formwork, specified as non-participating GRP or GRC, forms part of the structural construction requirements.
Specialist bridge components
The wider bridge specification includes the installation of bridge bearings, deck waterproofing, expansion joints and parapet systems. These components are essential to the bridge's intended structural performance, durability and safe integration with the highway network.
Integration with the surrounding infrastructure
The bridge works interface with the wider highway development, including approach earthworks, drainage and associated highway construction. Coordinating these elements is central to delivering a structure that functions as part of the wider transport network.
Engineering with the environment in mind
Situated within the River Ouzel corridor, the project incorporates specific environmental and ecological requirements.
Construction activities are required to include appropriate watercourse protection, pollution prevention and ecological management measures. The specification also includes an otter ledge at the western bridge abutment, providing a dedicated wildlife provision within the bridge design.
These requirements demonstrate the importance of considering the surrounding natural environment alongside the technical demands of major infrastructure construction.
Built around long-term performance
Durability is a fundamental consideration in the bridge specification. The main bridge concrete elements are assigned an intended working life of 120 years, supported by defined concrete grades, reinforcement requirements, exposure classifications and concrete cover provisions.
This emphasis on long-term performance is reflected throughout the specified structural materials and bridge components.
A key part of Milton Keynes East's future infrastructure
The River Ouzel Bridge brings together specialist piling, structural concrete engineering, bridge components and environmental management within one coordinated infrastructure project.
As part of the wider Milton Keynes East Highway Infrastructure development, it represents an important contribution to the transport network being delivered to support the area's future growth.
